Club Membership

Bay State Fencers offers Club Membership for experienced fencers who are interested in joining us. We offer several levels of membership to meet each individual’s needs. Levels of membership include; students, adults, competitive fencers, and families of two. The cost of club membership is included in all classes and program fees. Visitors are always welcome and are required to pay a $15 daily floor fee.

In addition to BSF Club Membership, all fencers who participate in our programming must be active members of USA Fencing, FIE, or an International Federation. USA Fencing, our national governing body, permits fencers to be members of more than one club, but to represent only one as their Competitive Club for the fencing season. In order to receive coaching at any competition, fencers must represent Bay State Fencers as their primary club.

Bay State Fencers is a full-service Epee Fencing Club serving communities in and around Watertown, Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston, MA. We are committed to fostering the principles of respect, patience, and competitive spirit. Our objective is to support each individual as they work to achieve their personal, athletic, and competitive goals. Fencers who participates at BSF must demonstrate respect for one’s self, respect for one’s opponent, respect for the sport of fencing, and respect for all coaches and officials of the sport.

Bay State Fencers is open to anyone interested in learning or participating in the Olympic Sport of Epee Fencing. However, participation at BSF is a privilege, not a right. Along with this privilege come certain expectations of behavior. In accordance with our Code of Conduct all fencers, guests, and coaches are obligated to demonstrate good sportsmanship, in both words and actions, to lose with honor, and to win with dignity.

  • Everyone who participates at BSF is entitled to feel safe, included, and valued.
  • Salute your opponent at the beginning of every bout and shake your opponent’s hand, with your non-weapon hand, at the end of every bout.
  • Experienced fencers are expected to fence with less experienced fencers patiently and with encouragement.
  • No one should argue with a referee, opponent, instructor, or coach.
  • No one should try to unfairly influence others to give you an advantage. Throwing a bout, giving touches, or by tampering with your equipment is not permitted.
  • Safety at BSF is of utmost importance.
  • If at any time a fencer threatens the safety of another fencer, guest, or coach a member of the BSF staff may immediately escort the threatening individual from the premises.
  • Always check your equipment and uniform for defects. Never use defective equipment.
  • Never point your weapon at anyone who is unmasked or unprotected and always carry your Epee pointed downwards.
  • Do not throw equipment under any circumstance.
  • Respect BSF facilities and club equipment at all times.
  • Do not hit or damage the walls, floor, or strips.
  • Treat club equipment as if it was your own property.
  • Always put your equipment away, hang up your fencing uniform, pick up after yourself, and dispose of all personal trash before leaving the Club.
  • Discrimination is not permitted at BSF.
  • Fencers, guests, and coaches are expected to treat others, at all times and in all respects, in a manner free from discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, status, religion, gender, or sexual orientation.

Fencers, guests, or coaches who don’t comply with this code of conduct may be subject to exclusion from fencing activities, suspension of fencing lessons, or expulsion from the club. Repeated violations will be reviewed, and the Club Director will determine any action taken.
